Montgomery County Public Schools are closed today due to emergency weather conditions. All school and community activities in school buildings also are canceled. All administrative offices are open. Day care programs in school buildings will remain open as scheduled.

School Staff Get Fit; Win Big in 'MCPS On The Move' Health Challenge

Montgomery County Public Schools staff burned more than 51 million calories and logged nearly 138,000 hours of exercise during a health and fitness challenge that had thousands of MCPS employees striving to live healthier lives.

  The MCPS On The Move competition, which recently wrapped up a 12-week run, was a partnership between Kaiser Permanente and the school system. Kaiser Permanente awarded more than $100,000 in prizes for individuals, teams and schools. Winners were announced at a ceremony on January 12 at Richard Montgomery High School, where former Olympic gymnast and Gaithersburg High School graduate Dominique Dawes spoke to contest participants.

MCPS Has Most Intel Science Talent Search Semifinalists in Nation

Since 1999, Montgomery Blair has produced more semifinalists than any high school in America

  Fifteen Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) students have been selected as semifinalists for the 2011 Intel Science Talent Search, the most semifinalists to come from any school district in the nation this year.

  The Intel Science Talent Search is one of the most prestigious pre-collegiate science competitions in the nation. The 15 students from MCPS represent most of Maryland’s 22 semifinalists in the competition, which is administered by the Society for Science & the Public, a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to public engagement in scientific research and education.

Board of Education Discusses Superintendent Search; Adolescent Literacy

The Montgomery County Board of Education met on Tuesday, January 11, and, among other items, discussed an update on the search for a new superintendent, adolescent literacy, and a school safety and security report. The Board also approved the  appointment of a new administrator, approved plans for three school addition projects, and passed a resolution recognizing February as African American History Month.

WHAT: This 1-day conference for 5th-12th grade students promises to educate and motivate students who seek information on how to crack into the video gaming industry.  From creation to marketing industry experts will introduce students to the various aspects of video game design, programming…and of course play!  With fun, food, and door prizes you don’t want to miss out on this experience.

The Leadership Training Institute Poetry Slam

The Leadership Training Institute Poetry Slam

The Leadership Training Institute Poetry Slam will be held in the chorus room at John F. Kennedy High School. be located in the chorus room at John F. Kennedy HS.

All proceeds go to support Project Create, which serves at-risk children from low income families with limited opportunities to discover the power and beauty of their opinions through art. 

In an effort to raise more funds for Project Create the LTI group will hold a silent auction the night of the slam, with work donated from artist, poets, and published writers. If you are able to donate work or know of interested parties, contact the poetry slammers at Jfkpoetryslam10@gmail.com or call Jennifer Schroeder at 301-942-3897. 

You can also show your financial support, donations can be turned into the LTI office at Kennedy, room 120. Please include poetry slam on the memo line of your check.
