Montgomery Co. road closure cause traffic delays

WHEATON, Md. (WUSA9) -- Drivers and pedestrians have been packing their patience this weekend.

A number of road closures and repair projects caused a lot of delays Saturday. One in particular reduced traffic to a crawl.

Weekend traffic work at busy Montgomery Co. intersection

The Maryland Department of Transportation says travel lanes at the intersection of Georgia Avenue (MD 97) and Randolph Road will be restricted to one lane in each direction on both roads from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.

Large machines and orange cones everywhere made one of the busiest intersections in Montgomery County even more chaotic.

"Everything goes down to one little lane. People are bad enough being impatient as it is, this isn't helping any," said Duane Fink.

Drivers could only make right turns at the intersection. Traffic came to a stop intermittently for repainting lanes.

Pedestrians need to be extra careful because there are no crosswalks.

"Everyone is just confused, drivers start looking around, once they look around they lose focus," said Rebecca Barahona.

People can expect this kind of work to go on for some time on the weekends. After they widen and repave at Georgia Avenue and Randolph Road. Crews will begin work on the next phase of the project, which is building a bridge.

That is expected to be completed by 2017. For now, drivers take it one weekend at a time.
