First Annual Water Safety Awareness Day

 

May is National Water Safety Month, and according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, drowning is the leading cause of death among children under the age of 5.

To prevent drowning and promote safe water practices, the British Swim School in Montgomery County will be hosting a free public event.

The First Annual Water Safety Awareness Day will take place on Sunday, May 20 at Healthtrax Fitness & Wellness Center in Germantown, Md.

The event is geared to provide preventive steps to drowning, and other safe water practices in addition to promoting healthy and active lifestyles.

The day will have activities for kids including fire trucks, police cars, bouncy houses, face paintings, a free swim, and more!

Free Digital World Tech Expo at Local Retirement Community

Accoding to The Nielsen Company, the number of people ages 50 and older actively using the Internet has increased by more than 55 percent to 17.7 million users last year.

For this reason, the public is invited to a free Digital World Tech Expo at Riderwood retirement community on June 27.

Located at 3140 Gracefield Road in Silver Spring, the tech expo will help attendees learn to use technology to stay connected with family, track personal finances and health care information while being entertained.

The tech expo is the first of its kind in the region and will be held from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the Performance Hall on the Riderwood campus.

Fourth Annual Takoma Park Safe Routes to School 5K Challenge

 

 

Registration is now open for the fourth annual Takoma Park Safe Routes to School 5K Challenge on Sunday, May 6.

This 5K promotes Safe Routes to School, and raises funds for the Parent Teacher Associations at four area elementary schools: Takoma Park ES, Piney Branch ES, Rolling Terrace ES, East Silver Spring ES and Takoma Park Middle School. 

The Takoma Safe Routes to School program encourages students to walk to school regularly and safely,with proceeds from the 5K going towards programs that focus on walking for health and bike/pedestrian safety.

DC CROP Hunger Walk: Ending Hunger…One Step at a Time

Looking to make a difference in these trying times, the Washington, DC CROP Hunger Walk has set a goal of 180 Walkers and a $20,000 target in order to help stop hunger and poverty in our community and around the world through self-help initiatives.  A portion of the funds raised here from the Washington, DC CROP Hunger Walk will go to help Martha’s Table and DC Hunger Solution.

The even will take place on Saturday, May 5 at the Christ United Methodist Church at 4th and I Street SW.  Registration starts at 9:45 a.m..

Local Charity Holds Seventh Annual Wine Tasting to Benefit Foster Care

 

May is National Foster Care Month. To celebrate, non-profit, KidsPeace, is holding their seventh annual wine tasting on May 24 at Corridor Fine Wine in Laurel.

From 6-9 p.m., guests will enjoy featured wines and champagnes from various countries and regions while benefitting 100 children in foster care programs throughout the D.C. area.

Thirty percent of all winery direct sales will be donated to benefit the KEYS program, which provides life-skills training for foster youth ages 16-20, who face uncertain times as they prepare for their transition from care to independent living.
