Montgomery County Public Libraries Hosts"Meet the Author" Programs Featuring Local Writers

Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) will host three “Meet the Author” programs in October featuring local authors.

On Wednesday, October 13 at 7 p.m., Olga Grushin, author of “The Line” and “The Dream Life of Sukhanov,” will be at the Silver Spring Library, 8901 Colesville Rd.

Grushin’s first novel, “The Dream Life of Sukhanov,” won the 2007 New York Public Library Young Lions Fiction Award and was chosen as a New York Times Notable Book of the Year and a Washington Post Top Ten Best Book of the Year. Her second novel, “The Line,” published in April 2010, was chosen as an Editors' Choice book by The New York Times. She is now at work on her third book.

On Saturday, October 16 at 2 p.m., novelist and short story writer Dolen Perkins-Valdez will be at Marilyn J. Praisner Library, 14910 Old Columbia Pike, Burtonsville for a reading and book signing of her debut novel, “Wench.”

TGIF Free Summer Concert

Friday August 27 at 7:00pm, come check out some of the best local music around.

Downtown Wheaton is hosting a summer concert that is free to the public. The concert features The Nighthawks with guest band Los Fabulocos.

The concert will be located at Wheaton Triangle (Grandview Avenue & Reedie Drive), downtown Wheaton.  One block from the Wheaton Metro.

Downtown Flea Market

A collector’s paradise, the Downtown Wheaton Flea Market attracts those looking to buy and sell from all over the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

Vendor items include international and domestic crafts, jewelry, art, household goods, antiques, perfumes, various collectibles, electronics, new/used items, tools, cloths and much more.

The market is located at the corner of Georgia Avenue and Reedie Drive in Wheaton, Maryland. There is plenty of parking in the area along with a wide variety of restaurants where market shoppers can take break to try local Wheaton dining.

Prince George's County Track Club Wins Big at AAU Jr. Olympics

Track Express Track Club (TETC), Prince George County's finest track club has been competing in the AAU Jr. Olympics track meets for over 15 years, breaking records and winning a number of gold medals year after year.

This year, it is no different in Norfolk, VA, with member, Rashad Manning breaking the record in the Javelin Throw for the youth boys. He also won the gold in the Discus and silver in the Shot put.

Have Fun at the 2010 Montgomery Country Fair and Help Feed the Hungry While Doing It

The 2010 Montgomery County Agricultural Fair will be held in Gaithersburg, MD from August 13 to 21.

Choose from over 40 carnival rides; participate in BINGO, cake auctions, and dance contests; and eat as many funnel cakes and snow cones your stomach can handle.

General admission is $10.00 per person while children 11 and under are free.  Parking is $5.00 per vehicle.

And please don’t forget to bring a non-perishable food donation for the Countrywide Food Drive benefitting the Manna Food Center.  Your canned food donations will help provide food to neighbors in need.
